BUILDING A CAPSULE WARDROBE

With the world going through the catastrophic times of natural disasters, climate change, and inflation, it is high time we change our habits that build the foundation of our everyday lives. The rising cost of living has forced families and individuals to live paycheck to paycheck and track down their expenses which shows how the world is changing. With the economic shifts, there is a much-needed change in our everyday habits like buying clothes smartly, buying clothes that will last longer and provide a high “cost per wear” compared to the low-quality fast fashion clothing that is manufactured by people who are paid minimal wages.

Our wardrobe is an integral part of our everyday routine, from the comfiest loungewear to work wear, our clothes symbolize our life and all moments whether small or big. Firstly, a disclaimer, by no means are we forcing you to trash all your existing clothes and purchase a brand new collection but the idea is to focus on building a capsule wardrobe as time progresses. Secondly, the idea of slow fashion comes from the fact that it focuses on pieces that are timeless, both in terms of the quality of fabric and the process of manufacturing and shipping.

Now let’s talk more about the idea of a capsule wardrobe. The term “capsule wardrobe” was coined by Susie Faux back in the 1970s when she started a London-based fashion boutique called Wardrobe. It means a “limited number of essential or staple items that you can wear for multiple seasons” and in today’s context, we can add that it is also a practice of creating different outfits from a range of versatile pieces that you love [2]. Less has become more, whether it is skincare, makeup, or fashion. The practice focuses on spending less energy and time on shopping and more on other productive aspects of life while reducing consumerism and avoiding the trap of fast fashion trends.

A basic capsule wardrobe depends on personal choice and is highly personable according to the weather, and your lifestyle. With the fall knocking on our doors, we will highlight what a capsule wardrobe for the season could look like.

  1. A Khakii or Black Trench Coat

  2. A Blue or Black Blazer

  3. Black and White Tank Tops

  4. A White Collared Shirt (What is more versatile than a classic white shirt that can be layered and even worn by itself to level up the outfit)

  5. High-waisted Tailored Trousers

  6. Basic Tees

  7. A Simple Belt

  8. A Striped Sweater

  9. A Maxi Dress

  10. A Pair of White Sneakers

  11. A Classic Black Dress

  12. A Pair of Black High Boots

  13. A Cozy Cardigan

  14. A Breezy Co-ord Set

Planning a wardrobe, whether it is from a style perspective or improving efficiency, is a skill that can be mastered by trying out the outfits before making it official. It saves the stress and waste of time we experience every time we have to go out or dress up for a day at work.
